10" tall lion's face - made from paper pulp. Toscano once sent me a catalog with all these cool medieval sculptures. I could never afford any, so I made my own, using theirs as inspiration. There's no under-structure, just paper, so the trick was to build it up from a flat surface before my pulp dried.

This is way cool, I must say it does look sort of like a medieval sculpture. And it's just paper? Crazy...

The pulp is sold in most craft stores. You can kind of control the stiffness by limiting the amount of water you use, but you need a consistent mixture. Since I needed it to essentially hold it's shape, I couldn't have it too gooey where it would start to spread out, so I made a batch and just kept adding more pulp until it could stand up. But less water means quicker drying time, so you have to work quick. I liked it because it was super easy to shape, yet softer and WAY cheaper than Sculpey, my usual clay of choice; and no baking! I couldn't get the fine detail I can with Sculpey, but I didn't need to.

In other words, try it, you'll like it!
